Late Fall

Late fall. There was even a squall of snow while four of us cleaned out the old ‘Core House’ (better known as the ‘Powderhouse’), hauled some special rocks from Rock Cut and built a fire ring.
The ‘Powder House’ is a few meters off the trails where #4 and Lempi Bypass intersect. It’s a rock constructed building with no roof nor windows; but what a structure. The ‘floor’ of the house is littered feet deep with broken 3/4” cores drilled from the mine. Cores tell mining engineers what’s ahead (or below) of them in the formation they’re working. This location, probably back in the 1920’s, was a pretty important place.

This winter we’ll be able to stop in, build a small fire and be out of the wind for a while. It’s a new wrinkle added to the Montreal Trails.
Since the Rangers have their own list of responsibilities, we’re hoping that people who want to use the ‘house’ for a camp fire will help develop it. The ‘house‘ needs an ample supply of firewood. It’s going to need a shovel after about the 3rd snow if one wants to find the fire ring and the stumps. We hope folks will add their own touches of comfort out there. There will be some string lights hanging along the old ridge line so you can see it from the trail in the evening.

It could be really cool…

Let’s make it a special place.

Take a short hike from the Rose Wreath trail head to visit the ‘house’. Set aside an hour to haul some wood or add another touch. Mark your calendar for a winter ski and campfire later this season.

Perhaps you’ll see us out there with you. Z
